Schoenlys and the Boyertown Catastrophe

On January 13, 1908 a Sunday school program of the local Lutheran Church in Boyertown turned into tragedy as fire broke out at the Rhoads Opera House where the event was being hosted. One hundred and seventy people perished in the blaze, twenty-five of whom were burned beyond recognition. One of these was Annie L. K. Heacock Schoenly, wife of George D. Schoenly. Annie was laid to rest among the ‘Unidentified’ in FairView cemetery just outside of Boyertown. It is also likely that Eva D. Schoenly, daughter of Joseph Schoenly and wife Emma Dearolf was also a victim. Eva, wife of William Z. Toms, died at the age of 19 on January 31, 2008 two weeks after the fire. Her husband William died the following August at the age of 21. Both are buried at FairView as well.
