    Family of Henry B. Schonely

    Schonely Family

It was my pleasure to recently receive from Mr. Jack Schonely the attached picture of the family of Henry B. Schonely. Henry B. and his wife Ada were Jack’s grandparents.

In the picture we see seated in the foreground (left to right) Ada C. (nee Weidner), Getrude, Walter, Helen and Henry B. … Arthur in the insert.
Standing we find Elwood, Harvey and Rufus.

Three of the Schonely sons were in the Navy. Elwood and Rufus served on the battleship USS Nevada and Walter on the USS Pennsylvania. Both these battleships were at Pearl Harbor when the Japanese attacked and both survived the bombing.

Henry was the son of George F. Schoenly and Lucy Bauman, born in 1873. According to the US Census 1880 the family spelled the name as Schoenly but by the 1900 census Schanely was used. Then by 1910 the Schonely variation had been settled upon.

By 1920 Henry B Schonely owned his own barber shop in Oley, PA and continue in that profession the remainder of his life. In the early 1960s he was still working as a barber and had a column written about him in the Pottown Mercury as the oldest barber in Pottstown. Henry died in 1964 over 90 years of age.

Schoenly Family Blog – Back Online

    April 8, 2011

The computer has been repaired and we are now up and running.

Discovered today that a genealogy webpage in Germany (genealogientz.net) which we discovered about a year ago and from which family info could be found has been updated.

    See: http://www.ortsfamilienbuecher.de/famreport.php?ofb=steinenbronn&ID=I2115&nachname=SCHIENLE&modus=&lang=en

The site now has Fredrick Schienle as having emigrated to America and lists modern spelling variations of the last name.

    Computer Problems

I have not been posting for more than a month due to some computer problems.  The computer I use for my genealogical records & database failed and is currently being worked on.  I am hopeful that the family info can be retrieved but I won’t know for sure for a couple weeks.  When I get word I’ll post it on the blog.

Hope you all have a Merry Christmas & Happy New Year.

The Estate of Andreas Schoenly – 1848

    Andreas Schoenly: 1762 - 1848

On June 11, 1848 Andreas Schoenly, son of the immigrant Friederich died. His wife Anna Maria Schweinhardt had passed away about three years prior to his death. Two of his sons, Frederick & George became his executers. The attached document, dated September 20, 1848 outlines their responsibilities.

Of interest on the document are the signatures of both Frederick & George. Also note the the spelling of the name, Schoenly, is the same as is most often currently used. Personally, I did not believe that this variation of the family name was in use until much later.

    Friederich Schienle Paid His Bills

    Militia Fines Paid

As mentioned earlier, Friederich Schanely was a member of the Berks County Militia during the Revolutionary War … specifically from 1777 – 1778. The attached is from the official records: State of the accounts of Jacob Morgan, Senior, late lieutenant of Berks County, from March 1777 to March 1780 : in which is exhibited the amount of the monies received by him within that time for militia fines …
    unknown: unknown, 1783, 54 pgs.

You’ll notice that Friederich evidently showed up for his drills and if not, paid his bills.

NOTE: Anna Maria Schweinhardt (Swinehart) was the wife of Fredrich Schienle’s only son, Andreas(sr). This means that all descendants of Fredrich / Andreas, carrying the family name (Schoenly, Schanely, Schonely & etc.) are also descendants of Anna Maria as well.

David, who are you and where are you from?

I’ve been entering more data into the family database and it’s been a lot of fun. I enjoy it.

However, as I’m sure you can imagine, it is sometimes hard to place the info with the right person. For the longest time I thought there was only one Jefferson Schanely, not so. Jefferson Christman Schanely was a veteran of the Civil War. However today I came across Jefferson H. Schoenly -or- Schanley -or- Schanely -or- Shanley. He too, Like Jefferson C. is buried at Niantic, however, being born in 1859 made him ineligible for the Civil War draft. As it turns out, Jefferson H. is the Nephew of Jefferson C. The name Jefferson must have been a popular one in the family circles because there is at least one other, I think two. Anyway, I did get Jefferson C. & Jefferson H. sorted out today and I feel a lot better now.

The next mystery I’m working on is that of David.

In my notes I had David Schanley married to a Mary but no other family connection. This was one of my very old notes and I had no documentation to put it in context. I fumbled around for awhile and found a David Schanely with a Mary as wife on the “Family Search Website” … they noted the name to be on the US Census of 1870. When I looked it up on the census I found David Schanely, living in Douglas Twp., with his wife, “Mary A.. Both David and Mary were listed as 49 years of age which meant that they were both born about 1821. Also listed were two daughters, Elmira (age 14) and an illegible name (age 18). Also, listed was Frederick Schanley (age: 76 – born abt 1794) which was immediately recognizable as Andreas Schonly, (Sr)’s son Friederich.

I also found this same family on the US Census of 1860 under David Shaenly and in 1880 as David Schoenly. Frederick, however, was listed only on the 1870 US Census with David.

If David was born in 1821 as all of the US Census records seem to indicate, then he was born in the very next generation after Frederick (b. 1794) and his brothers. I would think that in one’s old age you’d be more likely to live with a son or daughter than you would be to live with a niece or nephew. So my speculation is that Friederich was David’s father with whom he lived in 1870. However, the only children I have listed for Frederick are: Maria, SaraAnn, Jefferson and Frederick. If David is, in fact, the son of Frederick, he would be Frederick’s oldest child.

So we continue to search, sort and speculate.

Magdalena Schonle – daughter of Frederich & Anna Elizabetha

Frederich Schienle (the immigrant) and his wife Anna Elizabetha Kolb had a daughter, Magdalena, born about 1776. What ever happened to Magdalena?

From the writings of the Landis family we learn that Magdalena Schonle married Martin Ziegler Landis, son of Martin Landis and Hannah Ziegler. The time of their marriage is unknown. This couple had at least seven children, 6 sons and a daughter … probably more. All these children appear to have been born in Berks County, PA.

In 1828, Martin Landis with most of his sons, left Berks County for the Niagra Falls, NY area. It is unclear if Magdalena was still living. In 1836 and shortly after, it appears that many, if not all of the Landis sons & families again relocated to Waterloo, Jackson Co., Mich.

Currently the location of the grave site of Martin Landis and wife Magdalena is unknown.

Attached is an account of the outlined events of above.

    Landis
